Industrial Strength Wood Rack
Hey everyone! I’ve got a wood storage issue that’s a common problem among woodworkers - a system that’s more like a total disaster. So, I decided to build a proper wood storage rack, not one of those flimsy ones you see at woodworker supply centers. I mean, I usually have several hundred board feet of hardwood on hand, and I don’t want it to come crashing down anytime soon!
I found a design online that could handle the weight. But it was meant to be bolted to a wall, which didn’t work for me. So, I modified it to put the rack on wheels. Here’s why:
1. I put everything on wheels!
2. It goes in my garage with masonry walls, and I didn’t want to go through the hassle of attaching it to the wall.
So, I’ve shared the plans here if you’re interested in an industrial-weight wood rack. I’ve included two PDF files. The plans themselves and a simple cutlist diagram for one of the units. I tried to upload a OBJ file that could be imported into Sketchup. But the site wouldn't accept it.
It’s all made from 2x4s and 2x6s, plus some metal straps in the back that make it super sturdy.
If you want to attach it to the wall, you can leave out the foot and the matching diagonal braces. But make sure it’s attached to studs. I imagine that if you attach it to drywall with anchors, it’ll tear your drywall down when you fill it up.
Oh, and that thing to the left of the rack in the photo is a bin I use for odd pieces of wood that I can’t bring myself to throw out. I said I wanted to make things neater, not completely eliminate the mess.

Thanks for sharing Chris! I don't consider myself a hoarder; but I also have a problem throwing out wood scraps. You just never know when you might need it. 😉
